What the fuck is foam rolling?

Foam rolling, basically, is a type of stretch. Want some science? It's called Self-myofasical release.

This is not foam rolling.
It is a rolling horse.
It came up free in search results.

Foam rolling is not an exercise.
It is not cardio.
It is not strength building.
It won't significantly improve your endurance, agility, power, or reflexes.

It's a fucking stretch.


Some people do it as a way to warm up or cool down from an actual workout. Some people do it as a kind of massage or as a component of physical therapy.

Should everyone be doing foam rolling? 

I don't know. What I do know is that the National Academy of Sports Medicine recommends it as a type of stretching for people of all ages and fitness levels. They are not, to the best of my knowledge, attempting to mandate that everyone in the world partake in foam rolling under the penalty of death.

This study found that in athletes foam rolling could help reduce fatigue, but they did not find that it improved performance.

This other study found that foam rolling helped improve joint Range Of Motion and reduced pain while not effecting overall muscle strength.

To the best of my Google ability I have found no relationship between foam rolling and fertility, so it is not recommended as birth control. Sorry.
